Why San Juan County ranchers oppose another national monument in Bears Ears

Many ranchers living in the region of the Colorado Plateau depend on open range grazing to maintain their herds and family-run operations. Federal land grabs decrease the grazing ranges of these ranching families, and the proposed 1.9 million acre Bears Ears National Monument could deal a death blow to open range ranching in San Juan County, Utah.
The opposition surrounding Bears Ears is about protecting the rural people – their livelihoods and home. Grazing at Grand Staircase-Escalante has decreased by 31% since the monument designation. These ranchers’ livelihoods are at risk because of the pending national monument designation surrounding Bears Ears in San Juan County, Utah.
